Since the first Simpsons episode aired in 1989 it has grown remarkably in popularity and has been on for more than 13 seasons. Combine the most seen cartoon with the worlds most played online game and you have de_simpsons. The concept is already a winner - what's interesting is if the map plays well and if it gives you the right Simpsons feel.

Burns' office with the obligatory trapdoor.

The first thing you'll notice when you enter the map is the 'cartoonish' look which is nicely done, and it's easy to see the huge texturework Soup and Small Sumo has been doing. Areas like the square and Mr. Burns' office are rich on detail while other parts of the map seem a little empty. The SquareWhen you move around you'll spot plenty of symbols related to the TV show. The statue of Jebediah Springfield stands in the middle of the square which also has the Kwik E-mart, Moe's, Krusty Burger etc. Besides this Soup has added several sounds triggered from certain areas. If you walk by the Kwik E-mart you'll hear Apu talking, when you pass another area you'll hear the "monorail song", and in the powerplant you'll hear Homer complaining. The sounds are good fun but only the first three or four times you hear them - if you play the map for a longer period of time you'll eventually get really tired of hearing the same sounds over and over.

As in every other defusion map there are two bombspots - one in Burns' office (HINT: Don't plant the bomb on the trapdoor) and the other Map Overviewin front of the Simpsons house (CT spawn). In addition to the primary way for the terrorists there's also a way through a very complex sewer system with plenty of entrances similar to the one we know from Militia. The two bombspots are actually quite distanced so Soup has added a teleport system directly from spot A to B (see my overview drawing to the left), but unfortunately this causes several problems. First of all players will get stuck if to many enter the teleport at the same time, and people actually tend to do this all the time. Second it's almost impossible for CT's to succesfully attack through the teleport once the bomb has been planted. The terrorists know exactly where they'll appear and will have an easy time guarding it. This is propably the biggest gameplay problem the map suffers from.

The backyard and the teleport located in the garage.

De_Simpsons is a large map qualified for many players, and the map supports up to 32 players which will guarantee some hectic shootouts. It's easy to get lost in the beginning, especially in the sewer system or the power plant, but the different locations are quickly learned.
Today every map with respect for itself includes an easter egg, and de_simpsons is no exception. If you climb some of the roofs around the square and then jump onto Moe's roof you'll see a UFO flying around with the sound of the two goofy Simpsons aliens saying "take us to your leader". When you die and go into free look mode you can fly into the theater and find an easter egg with credits as well.

Simpsons Player ModelsDe_Simpsons is a visually great map that manages to get the player in the right Simpsons mood, and when it comes to gameplay it plays better than first anticipated, allthough it still suffers from some annoying bugs. If you're looking for a 'serious' map with gameplay first you might wan't to skip this one, but with this said de_simpsons can definitely bring you and your friends hours of fun and it's well worth the download. To complete the theme you can download the Simpsons player models from Small Sumo's site.

I'll rate this map around 7/10 but if you're a Simpsons fan you can add one more point to the score.

The easter egg and some fun with the gravity command.

Note for Linux server admins:

LINUX: The linux program is looking for all lower case, and the distibution file has an uppercase "S" in it. Linux is sensitve on case, where windows doesn't care.

File "0Soup0_simpsons.wad" should be "0soup0_simpsons.wad"

This should solve the linux server issue.

Update:

There seem to be a problem with spawn points when 32 players are in the game - people will simply telefrag each other. Server admins can find the solution for this problem in this forum thread.
